A FEW DETAILS. A CLEARER DIRECTION.

Find out what you need

Tell us about your operation. Get a starting checklist for your conversation with our team.

  • What you operate and what you transport
  • Where you travel and whether you haul for hire
  • Which registration or filing you need help with

Answer four steps about your registrations, operation, BOC-3 and insurance needs. This is preliminary guidance, not an official determination or record lookup.

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT

A number is a step.
Readiness is the goal.

01

Review your operation

Clarify your business type, vehicles, cargo and travel before choosing a registration.

02

Prepare & apply

Get application support. The company official keeps control of their Motus profile and identity verification.

03

Complete the filings

Arrange BOC-3 and required insurance filings for your authority. Our team can assist with BOC-3 and quote requests.

04

Confirm & prepare

Confirm granted authority where required, and review the other safety and state obligations for your operation.

FMCSA directs new registration applicants to Motus. Receiving a number does not by itself mean authority has been granted. Approval and timing are controlled by FMCSA.

Whether you’re starting with a van, a hotshot setup or a larger fleet, tell us what you operate. We’ll help you request a quote.

  • No charge to request a quote

  • Quotes through licensed insurance professionals

Requesting a quote does not purchase or bind coverage. Rates, availability and required filings depend on the insurer and your operation.

KNOW BEFORE YOU APPLY

Your questions.
Clear starting points.

Based on FMCSA registration guidance. Your exact requirements depend on your operation.

Sources reviewed October 22, 2026. Official rules and agency decisions control.

What is the difference between a USDOT number and MC authority?

A USDOT number identifies your business for federal safety oversight. Operating authority authorizes certain interstate for-hire transportation. Depending on your operation, you may need a USDOT number, operating authority, or both.

FMCSA reference ↗
Do I need a USDOT number for my van, hotshot or truck?

Vehicle type alone does not decide it. Interstate activity, vehicle or combination weight, passengers, hazardous materials and state rules all matter. A common federal interstate cargo threshold is 10,001 pounds or more, using the applicable rating or actual weight, whichever is greater. We can review your details with you.

FMCSA reference ↗
Who generally needs MC authority?

Interstate for-hire carriers transporting regulated property owned by others, and interstate passenger carriers operating for compensation, generally need authority. Private carriers hauling their own cargo and certain exempt operations may not. Your operation needs an individual review.

FMCSA reference ↗
Do you handle BOC-3 filing?

Yes. USDOT Service offers BOC-3 filing assistance. The filing designates agents to receive legal process. We explain the service and its cost before you purchase. A BOC-3 filing alone does not activate operating authority.

FMCSA reference ↗
Is the insurance quote free?

Yes, you can request a free insurance quote through our team. Quote requests are referred to licensed insurance professionals. A quote request does not bind coverage. Premiums, eligibility, coverage and any required filings depend on your business and the insurer.

Can I start hauling as soon as I receive a number?

Do not assume that a number means your authority is active. Where authority is required, confirm FMCSA has granted it and complete the applicable insurance and BOC-3 filings and other operating requirements before starting.

FMCSA reference ↗
Where does the FMCSA application happen?

FMCSA directs new applicants to Motus, its USDOT Registration System. Create your own user profile, complete identity verification and create a company account. Our team can help you understand the process and assist through authorized access. Keep control of your login and never share your password or verification codes.

FMCSA reference ↗
What government fees should I expect?

FMCSA lists a $300 fee for each permanent operating authority type requested. Mistaken applications are not refundable. Government fees, our assistance fees, BOC-3 services and insurance premiums are separate. We explain our service scope and pricing before purchase.

FMCSA reference ↗
What comes after registration?

Registration is the beginning. Depending on your operation, you may need driver qualification files, drug and alcohol testing arrangements, Clearinghouse support, state registrations or tax filings. New interstate carriers are generally monitored under FMCSA’s New Entrant program for 18 months and are subject to a safety audit.
